How to create a blood splatter effect

Im making a bloody trapland type of game. I want it so that when I die, a blood splatter effect would paint the ground until the level is complete. My character is a 2d sprite, but with 3d physics btw.

Spawn a blood stain sprite on the ground. Combine this with a blood spatter particle system at the source of the blood. Simplest solution might be the best one in this case, unless your going to be spawning millions of these things, or the ground is an uneven shape.
