Allowed to Sell Assets That Use Free Assets?

Suppose I wanted to make a demo scene to show off my asset that I want to sell. Could I, for example, use some free textures downloaded from the asset store in the scene?

What about if the textures were also paid assets and I bought them?

What if I downloaded them from outside the asset store and they were public domain?

Basically, in general, what are my options for using other people’s things in my things that I want to sell?

Thank you very much!

As a general rule, you can’t. Full stop. Even assets that are considered “free” (i.e. you didn’t have to pay for them) are generally governed by licenses that means you may not redistribute them.

This is certainly true for any assets you acquire from the Unity Asset Store, which are expressly governed by Section 3.8i of the licence agreement:

You agree that you will not, and will not allow any third party to copy, sell, distribute, transfer, modify, adapt, translate, prepare derivative works from, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble or otherwise attempt to derive source code from the Unity Asset Store or the Assets, unless otherwise permitted

The clause to take note of here is the very final “unless otherwise prohibited” - if you contact the asset author and they let you include the asset in your pack, that’s fine. Including public domain assets should also be fine (assuming they are genuinely public domain, and not just unattributed.)
