Input.inputString is never set on Mac in a browser

Is this a known limitation or a bug? I made a simple app doing nothing but setting an on screen string to the value of Input.inputString, works great in unity but does nothing running in a browser on a mac. Windows browsers all work.

Try clicking on the Unity window first to give focus to it.

No, I wish that was it. :( Where we are using it is actually a text field so you have to click the screen before typing.
