Do something if an operation fails

I have a code

GetComponentInChildren(SkinnedMeshRenderer)().sharedMesh;

What I need is that if it fails to find a skinnedmesh in the gameobject, it will run another command. Replaced sharp brackets with () because otherwise it wasn't showing

In JS it could look like this:

var mesh : Mesh = GetComponentInChildren(SkinnedMeshRenderer).sharedMesh;
if (mesh == null) {
   ...
}

or

if (!GetComponentInChildren(SkinnedMeshRenderer).sharedMesh) {
  ...
}
