I'm making something targeted to the iPad which obviously does not support a mouse, so how do I check when my buttons drawn during OnGUI() are poked?

There's nothing that refers to a mouse in any GUI function. Have you tried it and actually had a problem? Other than UnityGUI being slow, it worked fine.
Up to 2 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 524.3 kB each and 1.0 MB total.
