I created a GUI Texture and GUI Text according to the book Unity 3.X Game Development Essentials and it says I should be able to see the text and the texture in the scene without having to press play. Is this something that was changed in Unity 4?

Yes, it's changed in Unity 4 since it never really made a lot of sense for them to appear in the scene view, however they appear in the game view without having to be in play mode.
Finally found the answer why GUI Texture and Text is now showing in Scene windows, in Unity 4. Thanx. :)
