This has been a bug that's been around since a few subversions ago, but just checking if this occurs for you too..
1) start unity. switch to a different project
2) try to import an asset. -600 error occurs.
The only fix is having to re-start Unity.. Is there another way to fix this?

Update to unity 5 that's it!
That wasn't really an option 4½ years ago, when the question was asked...
Up to 2 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 524.3 kB each and 1.0 MB total.
