How would I make an active spell casting system in my game? Like the player presses a button to bring up a sub-menu and then has to press the correct keys to cast a certain spell. Sort of like the Ocarina of Time in Zelda.

Your question is way to generic, we can't do your game for you. Find out how to detect a keyboard input, then how to use GUI, what you want to happen when the event CastSpell is thrown and finally how to achieve that.
