What is the easiest software to learn 3d object creation and animation for my new animator? (wants to learn and become))

One of my friends wants to learn 3d animation and objects. Im not very good at it and I'm a programmer with no artistic ability.

He wants to help and I was hoping one of you knowledgeable artists out there may be able to point him in the right direction.

I understand that it takes practice and work, but yet i don't want to point him to an easy program that has a creative ceiling that will limit him.

is blender good? any other suggestions?

I'm creating a networked game for one of my college classes.

I use Blender because it's free (and good), but in the end its really up to personal preference.

Networked game? Sounds fun!

Since this doesn't have an answer as such, since it's a matter of opinion, it should be a discussion question on http://forum.unity3d.com. (And in fact it's been discussed to death, so it would be better to pick one of the threads and read it rather than starting a new one.)
