I finally got Unity3D (from a different computer downloading to a thumb drive) and I installed it. First it says that the date was inconsistent with release (which shouldn't matter seeing that THIS IS A FREE VERSION!) But after installing it would not allow me to use UNITY3D. It immediately requested that I register or quit.

It is free. The registration process is free: it's just another user account. For free users, like me, registration seem excessive, but it is helpful in the long run:
It does not appear necissary at first, but the registration is free, and it makes things run smoother in the long run.

I don't see what the problem is. the indie version is free- that's true.. registering does not mean you have to pay. UT likes to know who's using their engine.. so they require you to register it if you're going to use it.. paid or otherwise. So suck it up and register :P
