Trouble with animation wrap mode-animation plays randomly

My animation is set to default wrap mode but the animation continues to play and loop without calling the animation. How is this possible? I have no triggers no scripts calling the animation at the time the animation starts playing and it just starts randomly at different points of play. The animation is not set on Play automatically. The box is not checked. I've set the wrap mode to "Clamp forever", "default" and "once" and the animation still plays at random points during play. Is there a setting that maybe I can change or is this a Bug?

One more thing about the animation. I imported some of the game objects within the animation from 3d studio max. a sphere thats split in half which is attached to a gameobject that I created in Unity. The animation has several animated movements within the animations. In other words, the gameobject moves into the scene and then the sphere splits and move apart. I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem but either way I have been trying to resolve this for days and I'm baffled. My cat might have jumped on my keyboard and changed a setting, I don't know. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated but I haven't been able to figure it out. thanx

ps I haven't had any problems with any other simpler animations prior to this split sphere animation.

I may have a reason why. I created a unity package of my whole project and then created a new Project. I've been working in the new project and I believe that there may be a problem with the package I created. The animation function definately has a glich or bug. I went back to my old project and I'm not having the same problem at least so far.
