Performance difference between combined mesh and procedural mesh?

I am currently building a system that systematically builds models. I know that Unity's meshes have the ability to be combined, but what happens when you start combining hundreds of cubes (think minecraft here...). Would it be better to procedurally create the mesh or would it be better to just combine the meshes with Unity's build in functions?
