I noticed that a while ago, the only objects showing up in the editor are the ones that to which I assigned a specific layer... In other words, the objects in the default layer are not rendering.

I would assume because you turned off the rendering of the default layer in the editor (using the Layers drop-down menu). You are a life saver, that was the only thing I hadn't checked... Now I feel a little bit stupid but I'll leave the question in case there are people as stupid as me :)
