>= vs > for performance?

I’m wondering if using > instead of >= would be more efficienct when comparing floats.

Let’s say that I have a variable which increases based on Time.deltaTime.

myAwesomeVariable += Time.deltaTime * someConstant;

I want to see if myAwesomeVariable is equal to 50 or more. Should I say

if (myAwesomeVariable >= 50) { code }

or

if (myAwesomeVariable > 50) { code }

I’m wondering this because realisticly, the variable will never be exactly 50, so should I only check if it’s bigger?

Would having thousands of these make the game run slower than if we were only checking if the variable is bigger than the target?

There’s no difference (> and >= are separate operations that use the same number of CPU cycles; it’s not like >= does two checks), but you should always check for yourself using the profiler. However your primary consideration should be writing legible code. Micro-optimizations, even if they’re real, rarely make any sense.

This is a good example of why not to even think about “micro-optimizations.”

You write the value will never be exactly 50. But one time in a thousand, it will. Is 50 too big? Will it cause an error (a pop-through, graphics glitch … ?) If so, use >=. Or is 50 the correct end? In that case, use > so you won’t lose a frame when it happens to land on 50.

Even if you knew one ran a teeny, tiny bit faster, it’s still better to avoid a once/hour visual glitch (or crash!)
