Mecanim Animator - How to select bones in Editor?

Ok, I think I’m totally missing something here.

I’ve imported a FBX model and I’m using Mecanim to do animations and it all works well.
I wanted to attach some objects to the bones but I can’t see them in the Editor unless I go into the Rig/Configure window.

Is that normal? On all the videos I see, people actually get the hierarchy in the Editor all the time.

What am I missing here?
How can I select the actual bones in the editor?

Terrible documentation…it took me 3 hours to figure this out!

If “Optimize Game Objects” is turned on, then the hiearchy doesnt show up, but if you want specific bones to show then you use the drop down option to select them.
